About Us

Welcome to Greenbriar!

Greenbriar School is a vibrant neighborhood school of approximately 330 students in grades K-5 in Northbrook School District 28. We are located at 2195 Cherry Lane in Northbrook. Our mascot is the Greyhound. Greenbriar is the proud recipient of the 2013 National Blue Ribbon Award.

At Greenbriar, we work to educate the whole child. Our comprehensive program includes a balance of academics, fine arts, and social-emotional learning, all of which challenge children to reach their fullest potential.

Academics

K-5 students receive a full day of core academic instruction which includes Reading & Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. First through 5th grade students also participate in Spanish instruction five days a week. In addition to core content, students have physical education five days a week, and music and art instruction twice a week. Students in 3rd-5th grade have the option of participating in band or orchestra and are provided weekly lessons from our district music department.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

Kindergarten through 2nd-grade students and staff use a SEL program called Everyday Speech. This program gives students the tools to practice foundational social and emotional skills in fun and engaging ways. Through short videos, modeling, and interactive activities, students learn important everyday skills such as taking turns, expressing feelings, making friends, and solving problems in positive ways. These lessons provide a strong foundation for healthy relationships and confident learning

Grades 3-5 use a program called Wayfinder. Wayfinder focuses on six Core Skills: Self-Awareness, Adaptability, Empathy, Collaboration, Agency, and Purpose. Each week, students participate in interactive lessons and discussions that help them connect with themselves, their peers, and their community. Wayfinder gives students a sense of belonging and purpose while also strengthening the skills that support success in school and beyond.

History

Greenbriar opened in 1949, when Northbrook’s population was less 3,000, with five classrooms, a gym, and an office for just $222,612! The school expanded in 1952 and 1961 to accommodate more students, and in 2012, District 28 partnered with the Northbrook Park District to add a large gym, classrooms, and a new front office.

Greenbriar's first mascot was the Greenbriar Gremlin. Around 1993, Greenbriar adopted the Greyhound as the school mascot, and in 2017, students named the mascot Flash. During the 2024-25 school year, Greenbriar celebrated the school's 75th anniversary
